This weekend I got to get out and let my inner geek loose. Huntsville Comic Con at Lowe Mill was actually my first convention. I’ve wanted to go for years, but having young kids at home makes it really hard to get out to an event like this. My husband and I got to spend the day photographing and shopping and meeting other geeks and it was absolutely amazing.
We got to meet Miracole Burns and sit in on her panel with her husband Chris. She has turned her hobby into a career and her stories had me totally geeking out. I think cosplay may be on my bucket list now. We also stopped by Superpowered Studios, the sponsor of the event, and got to chat for a while with comic book artist Kevin Stokes. He showed us his original comic, Splitsville, and we took the set home for ourselves. He has hopes of getting it turned into a movie by Dreamworks one day, and I think it will be really cool to have read it and met the man who created it.
Honestly, the geek culture is one of my favorite things about Huntsville. I don’t know of any other place that is this small and still has such a huge geek population. It is incredible. Huntsville is just my favorite place and I am so happy that we have a place like Lowe Mill that really allows us to meet and support local artists and other people who have a passion for creative pursuits. I am really looking forward to more geek events in the future.
